Vague

Today,
Rats in vague formations strand trembling in strange gear.
Frightened of their weapon,
On their unimaginable uniforms are shining brass buttons
That they’d have given their eyeteeth for only yesterday.

Yesterday,
Life was hard
But brother and brother were not killing each other.
They had been barefoot,
But on the soft grasses of peace,

Today,
They trampled those grasses,
Moving upon sharp stones and constant fear.
Yesterday,
It had not been so wonderful,
But unlike Today,
There was no War.
